Description
This section of the Conestoga Trail System runs from Holtwood to Pequea, PA. The trail pathway features some stone paths, with a good length of natural surface throughout the hike. At 14.3 miles, be prepared for periods of strenuous hiking up steep hills and occasional rock scrambles. The climb up steep hills is rewarded with a beautiful overlook of the Susquehanna River, and the hike through creek valleys on the way back includes a charming crossing of the Tucquan Creek and several small waterfalls.
Begin your hike at Pinnacle Overlook in Holtwood. Trail system maps are available at this site. Once you set off on the trail, remember to keep an eye out for the orange blazes that mark the route. In some areas, the rocks themselves will be blazed. A slanted double blade indicates a change in direction. Be careful of frequent angled slopes, quick turns, and steep inclines/declines. This route is definitely a trail for the more experienced hiker, but the rewards of amazing overlook views and beautiful landscapes along Tucquan Creek make this hike one for your “to-do” list.
The Lancaster Hiking Club cares for and maintains the Conestoga Trail and has produced a new guide book, which can be found here.
