Description
Also known as the Susquehanna River Commons, the Luzerne County Levee Trail is a 12-mile paved path made up of 4 different reaches on either side of the Susquehanna River. A system of interconnected paved trails built atop the flood protection levees in the Wyoming Valley. Also known as the Susquehanna River Levee Trail, the systems includes the communities of Wilkes-Barre, Hanover Township, Plymouth, Edwardsville, Kingston, Wyoming, and Forty Fort. Most road intersections have the trail passing under bridges to allow safe crossing. The trail is well marked with historical information plaques and mile markers painted on the asphalt. The multi-purpose path gets frequent use by runners, walkers, and bicyclists. Numerous benches provide convenient rest areas. Adjacent recreation areas include port-a-potties.
A portion of the trail in Wyoming where the trail straddles the river and the main runway of the Wyoming Valley Airport, trail users can view planes taking off and landing. Designated bike lanes connect the system with the Back Mountain Trail. Future plans include connections to the D&L Trail and the Susquehanna Warrior Trail.
Parking and Trail Access
There are numerous access points for the trail system. Dedicated trailhead parking is available at the trail intersection with route 11, near the Wyoming Monument in Wyoming, at the intersection of Third Avenue and the Cross Valley Expressway in Kingston, and the Breslau Section of Hanover Township. Other popular access points include Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre, Nesbitt Park in Kingston, and the Wyoming Valley Recreation Complex in Wyoming. South Wilkes-Barre has recreation fields adjacent to the levee that provide convenient parking and access.
