Named in honor of Robert Heysham Sayre (president of the Pennsylvania and New York Railroad Company), the town is also known for its history of locomotive shops and railroad operations. Lehigh Valley Railroad shops dominated the town and were key to its success.

Diahoga Trail

The 1.56-mile Diahoga Trail runs along the western side of the Susquehanna River from the Athens Bridge on Susquehanna Street to Hayden Street in Sayre. The trail meanders through the woods just north of the boat launch at Riverfront Park and then up a slight incline to the open space of the riverbank in Athens, allowing for a view of the river and the sighting of eagles and waterfowl.

Howard Elmer Park

Often referred to as the heart of Sayre Borough, Howard Elmer Park has remained a memorable, unchanged feature of Sayre more than 130 years. Initially named City Park, it was later renamed to honor the town’s founder, and has been the feature of several celebrations and memorials throughout its history.
