Description

This looped trail presents the opportunity for visitors to experience one of the most famous trails in the United States and to see wonderful views of the Susquehanna River as you climb Peters Mountain along the Appalachian Trail.

The first leg of the trail is a steep climb, but you will begin to see stunning views of the Susquehanna River along the way. More vistas are present as you follow switchbacks up to the summit. Here, you will find a stony ridge at the crest/top of the mountain. To the north, you will be able to see a breathtaking view of the Juniata River connecting to the Susquehanna River, and where US Route 22 crosses the river. To the south, if you look carefully with binoculars you can also see the Lady Liberty of the Susquehanna on a clear day.

The trail eventually comes to another intersection where you will veer left off of the Appalachian Trail for a steep climb down the mountain. From this point you can return to the parking area by following this loop back down, or you can continue east to experience even more of the iconic Appalachian Trail. The Clarks Ferry Shelter waypoint on the AT is not too far from this intersection.

Parking and Trail Access

To reach the Clark’s Ferry Park and Ride, head south on PA-147 and look for the lot on your left located underneath the US-322 on-ramp bridge. If taking US-15 south, take the exit onto US-22 after passing through New Buffalo. Continue on US-22 onto the Clarks Ferry Bridge and take the exit to head underneath. The parking lot will be on your left.

From the Clark’s Ferry Park and Ride lot, cross over the railroad tracks to reach the start of the trail. Be prepared for some steep climbing right from the start, as the trail ventures up Peters Mountain. Look out for white blazes to ensure you are on the trail.
