The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership (SGP) is thrilled to support the Susquehanna River North Branch as a nominee for River the Year 2023! As the water trail manager of the Lower North Branch (Columbia/Luzerne County line to Sunbury), SGP works closely along this part of the river with many partners to support conservation efforts and recreational opportunities. We are joined by the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, who manages the Upper North Branch (NY border to Columbia/Luzerne County line).

The North Branch and the communities along the river could greatly benefit from your vote!

This very special designation, administered by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR), could mean a lot for conservation efforts and recreational opportunities along the North Branch.

After a waterway is chosen for the annual honor, local groups implement a year-round slate of activities and events to celebrate the river, including a paddling trip, or sojourn. A $10,000 leadership grant will be awarded from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to help fund River of the Year activities.

So, what’s in store should the North Branch win? An article put together by the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association dives into some of these details.

The North Branch is a living, breathing thing. It has a character that is as unique and changing as the river itself, shifting from rolling meadows & forests to seemingly endless mountains, vibrant cities with industrial pasts to quaint river towns that dot the winding river valley.

The SGP is proud to manage a piece of it alongside many noteworthy partners, all of whom will do their part to improve the health and accessibility of the river should the North Branch receive this very special designation. Now, it’s up to our friends and neighbors to show their North Branch love. Vote and help us foster this treasure that runs right through our backyard!

One vote is allowed per email between now and 5 p.m. EST on Jan. 18, 2023. Voting can be done at this link. Learn more about each of the 2023 River of the Year finalists here.
