Athens also features quaint local shops as well as several large chain stores. Before Athens officially received its charter in 1797, it served as a great Indian resort. Several features of the town are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the Athens Historic District, Protection of the Flag Monument, and Spalding Memorial Library-Tioga Point Museum.

Diahoga Trail

The 1.56-mile Diahoga Trail runs along the western side of the Susquehanna River from the Athens Bridge on Susquehanna Street to Hayden Street in Sayre. The trail meanders through the woods just north of the boat launch at Riverfront Park and then up a slight incline to the open space of the riverbank in Athens, allowing for a view of the river and the sighting of eagles and waterfowl.

Spalding Memorial Library-Museum

Constructed in 1897, the building was designed to house a free library on the first floor, with the Tioga Point Museum on the second. Funds for construction of the building were donated by a Chicago lumberman, Jesse Spalding, in memorial of his son Robert. Jim King Memorial Park and Round Top Park

The Jim King Memorial Park offers plenty of opportunities for recreation, including a ball field, basketball and volleyball courts, a walking path, and several pavilions. Round Top Park is the largest park in Athens township and features playground equipment, a fishing pond, hunting, hiking trails, and sledding and cross-country skiing within its 575 acres.
