About the Park
Shikellamy State Park is located at the confluence (meeting point) of the West Branch and North Branch of the Susquehanna River. The Park is divided into two main sections: 1) the Overlook on the western shore of the West Branch of the river, and 2) a Marina on the southern portion of Packer’s Island along the North Branch.
The Overlook offers an amazing view of the river confluence and West Branch from 360 feet above the water, as well as a hiking trail and picnic pavilion. On Packer’s Island, the Marina offers walking and biking trails, and provides a scenic view of Lake Augusta and the river. Keep an eye out in the early morning and afternoon for the team rowers, who utilize the calm waters of Lake Augusta for practice. Fun Fact: Lake Augusta is a seasonal lake. It is created each spring and disappears each fall with the inflation/deflation of the Sunbury Fabridam; the world’s longest and largest inflatable dam.
Also along the Marina is a constructed research center for environmental studies and education of the Susquehanna River Watershed. Numerous picnic tables and easy walking routes are also location within the area for a more relaxing day out. Below are some recommended activities during your visit.
- Hike the nature trail on the Overlook – Along with its stunning views, the Overlook features a one mile nature trail. As you walk through, you will have the chance to observe wildlife such as white-tailed deer and a variety of songbirds.
- Boat on Lake Augusta – Spend the day out on the water by renting a jet ski, pontoon boat, kayak, or canoe. Go fishing for a variety of bass, crappies, catfish and more, or just cruise along the water and enjoy the scenery.
- Watch Rowers on Lake Augusta – Many local colleges and universities use the calm waters of Lake Augusta for rowing practices and competitions. The best place to watch these rowers is the southern tip of the island.
- View the Confluence – One of the most unique parts of the park is the nearby meeting point of the West and North Branches of the Susquehanna River. When these two bodies of water meet west of Packer’s Island, the (often) blue water of the West Branch and darker brown waters of the North Branch create a clear dividing line.
