60 participants and the 17 volunteers took to the land and water around the Jersey Shore for the first annual Pedal & Paddle Jersey Shore event! While the morning started out dreary with overcast skies and a chance of rain, the afternoon shaped up to be one for the record books as the newly emerging sun brought warm temperatures and plenty of blue skies. See photos on our Facebook page!
We started our morning along the Pine Creek Rail Trail for a 4.5 mile bike ride. Along the way, we listened to presentations from Taylor Camerer of the Jersey Shore Historical Society, who told us more about the history of Jersey Shore and how the town got its name. PA Master Naturalist, Michele Richards, joined us on the trail to explain more about the geology of the area. Lunch was served at White Tail Access Area where Tiadaghton State Forest representative, Richard Hill, talked to us about the history of the Pine Creek Valley and Rail Trail.
After lunch, we moved to start our 7.9 paddle down Pine Creek and into the West Branch of the Susquehanna. Canoe Susquehanna provided kayaks and a quick safety lesson before launching at Torbert Access. Participants enjoyed breath taking views of the surrounding mountains, an on water presentation from Tina Conney of the Jersey Shore Historical Society, and even got into a few playful water fights. All in all this was a day to remember. Thank you to all those who came out to the event.
This event was made possible by our generous event sponsors: the Lock Haven Express, Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Jersey Shore State Bank, POWR, Jersey Shore Hospital, Jim Ely- State Farm Insurance Agent, Muncy Bank and Trust, and Canoe Susquehanna.
