hiker stands on an overlook with the Susquehanna River in the background“I’ve hiked Schull’s Rock in both spring and early fall, and each season brings something new to discover. In the fall, the pawpaw trees were heavy with fruit, and in spring, a whole carpet of mayapples covered the forest floor. The meadows are gorgeous, and the overlook of the Susquehanna River is absolutely stunning. It’s a short trail with much to see!”

The overlook trail to Schull’s Rock offers a light hike to a stunning overlook at the Susquehanna Riverlands State Park. It crosses woodlands and meadows and passes by farm fields before opening up to the view above the river. Nature enthusiasts will be treated to sights of natural quartz along the trail and a patch of pawpaw trees before approaching the cliff’s edge. The trail is marked with yellow blazes.

Description

From the gravel parking lot, cross the road to begin your hike at the meadow’s edge. Follow the yellow blazes, as the trail transitions to a more rugged path into the woods. The trail will open up several times to meadows and farm fields where you may encounter native wildflowers buzzing with pollinators. Be mindful of private property as the trail runs alongside a privately owned farm. The park also has designated hunting areas, so be sure to wear orange during hunting season.

You will encounter one more patch of forest that is lush with pawpaw trees which ripen in late summer to early fall. From here, you will soon reach the overlook, which opens up to a striking view of the Susquehanna River down below. To the west, you will see the Shocks Mill Bridge, a landmark railroad bridge on this section of the river.
