Wilkes-Barre; Wyoming Valley Riverfest

Description: Each year, RiverFest occurs along the banks of the Susquehanna River. Thousands of river enthusiasts turnout to paddle, kayak, canoe and recreate on the waterway. The annual event attracts more than 5,000 people and features musical entertainment, children’s activities and educational programming.

RIVER TOURS

Trip 1 – Paddle Thru Time – Friday, June 21 (8am – noon) 2019 is the 205th Anniversary of the founding of Wilkes-Barre by Connecticut Yankees. Learn about the history and contributions of these early settlers during this trip. Pitt's Town was one of the 5 original Connecticut Townships dating back to 1769.  

Trip 2 – Friday Evening Paddle thru the Heart of the Wyoming Valley – Friday, June 21 (4:00 -7:00 PM) West Pittston to Wilkes-Barre’s Nesbitt Park (3 hour- early evening). Paddle through the industrial history of the Wyoming Valley, where anthracite coal has been used since 1769. See remnants of the North Branch Canal, Knox Mine Disaster, and how mining affected the river and Wyoming Valley. 

Trip 3 – River Tour to the Festival – Saturday, June 22 – Apple Tree PFBC Access Harding to Wilkes-Barre’s Nesbitt Park (4-5 hours).  Spend a good part of the day exploring the valley and the Susquehanna as you paddle south to Nesbitt Park, Wilkes-Barre to join the Festival in the afternoon.

Trip 4 – Sunday Morning Paddle South – Sunday, June 23 – Nesbitt Park to Hunlock Creek (4 hours) See another side of the Wyoming Valley including the only rapids on the North Branch of the Susquehanna. *Note restrictions below.

 

*Note restrictions –   Because of Nanticoke Rapids there will not be tandem kayak or canoe rentals or children under 12 allowed on the Sunday Trip!
