Pop-Up Paddle FAQ

Q. How do I rent a kayak?

  • To reserve your kayak or canoe, simply mark your registration. Rentals are $35 per single vessel, $45 per tandem. The outfitter will have the rentals and safety equipment available at the launch.

Q. What about check-in?

  • Check-in will be located at Milton State Park. Please bring your signed participant forms.
  • In order to streamline the lunch stop, please be prepared to give your lunch order at check-in. See the menu for the event here. Each person may select one basket.

Q. Will there be a shuttle?

  • In accordance with COVID-19 restrictions and best practices, SGP has adjusted our shuttling procedures. We are unable to move personal boats this year. If you are bringing your own boat(s), please drop them off at the put-in at Milton State Park when you check in. Please also drop off any passengers in your car with your boats at Milton. Drivers should then proceed down to Shikellamy State Park Marina. If you are renting boats, drivers should drop off passengers at Milton State Park, check-in, and only the drivers should proceed to Shikellamy. We will then shuttle only the drivers back up to the put-in. This will allow some spacing on the shuttle bus to accommodate COVID-19 precautions.
  • Please note: all passengers on the drivers shuttle will be required to wear a mask for the duration of the ride. No one will be allowed on the bus without a mask.
  • We shuttle this way (with your cars at the end of the paddle) so that your car will be right at the take-out at the end of the day. There will not be a shuttle back to the put-in at the conclusion of the event.

Q. What's the address/route?

  • Our starting location (registration/check-in) and put-in location is at Milton State Park, 205 PA-642, Milton, PA 17847.
  • The take-out for the kayaks is located at Shikellamy State Park: Marina Section, Packers Island, Sunbury, PA 17801. This is the launch located on the West side of the island.

  • Most of the route includes scenic flat water, with some iconic bridges and an opportunity to learn about the wildlife and ecology of this section. We will have PA Master Naturalists along for the float. After about 4.5 miles we will be taking out onshore for lunch at The Fence Drive-In Restaurant. The paddle will then continue as the West Branch transitions into Lake Augusta near its confluence with the North Branch. Shortly thereafter is the take-out site at Shikellamy State Park on Packers Island.

Q. What about lodging?

  • There are several hotels in the Lewisburg, Selinsgrove, Sunbury, and Shamokin Dam areas; these range in distance but are within 10-20 minutes away. Please reach out to the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau for recommendations. They can be reached by emailing info@VisitCentralPA.org, or calling 800-525-7320 or 570-524-7234.

Q. Can I bring my kids?

  • This is a family-friendly event, and children are welcome to attend. However, children under the age of 8 may NOT pilot their own craft (kayak or canoe). This article from REI can help you plan for the paddle event.
  • It is also important to note that this can be a long paddle (11+ miles) for children 10 and under. Consider renting a tandem kayak to avoid falling behind. Tandem kayaks and canoes are available through registration.

Q. Do I need to register my boat?

Q. Is there a rain date?

  • Rain - the event will continue as scheduled for rain alone. Should alternate weather conditions present on the day of the event, SGP will work with park staff to determine an appropriate alternative or cancel the event.
  • There is not an alternate rain date at this time. Should that change, SGP will notify all registrants.

Q. What should I bring?

  • A Mask or face covering. SGP will be implementing precautions at several points within the paddle including the shuttle and lunch stop. We ask that for the safety of yourself and your fellow paddlers that you wear a mask or face covering during these points in the paddle. SGP will supply water tight bags for your mask.
  • If it is cold and rainy, NO COTTON.
  • If an article of clothing says it is fleece (like a sweatshirt) make sure the fleece is polyester.
  • You are required to bring and wear a PFD if you are providing your own boat.
  • Please wear appropriate closed-toe shoes, as we will be getting in and our of our boats on several occasions and the landscape may be muddy/rocky.
  • Athletic-type/quick-drying apparel is recommended, and consider bringing a backpack or hydration pack, and snacks.
