Island Hopper 2018 Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. How do I rent a kayak?

    • Kayak rentals are available upon registration, and they have been discounted to $20 per boat with Stone Barn Outfitters.

    Q. What about check-in and shuttles?

    • All participants will need to check-in at the Mahantango Boat Access on Saturday morning. All individuals and their boats will be shuttled up to the put-in at the Isle of Que.
    • Please note: you are welcome to drop off your boat at the put-in prior or after registration. However, due to limited parking we ask that you please return to the registration area and take the shuttle. There will not be a shuttle back to the put-in at the conclusion of the event.

    Q. What's the address/route?

    • Our starting location (registration/check-in) and take-out location is at the Mahantango Boat Access: Port Trevorton, PA 17864.
    • The put-in for the kayaks is located at the Isle of Que Boat Access: 700 South Front Street, Selinsgrove, PA 17870.

    • Most of the route includes scenic flat water, with an opportunity for a little excitement at the end! From Isle of Que, we'll be heading to lunch at Port Trevorton Fire Department picnic grounds, then stopping at island 111 to investigate one of the established campsites. We'll regroup at island 109 before proceeding through McKee's Half Falls (at the easiest location) with the assistance of safety stewards. Shortly thereafter is the take-out location.

    Q. What about lodging?

    • There are several hotels in the Selinsgrove, Sunbury, and Shamokin Dam areas; these range in distance but are within 10-20 minutes away.

    Q. Can I bring my kids?

    • This is a family-friendly event, and children are welcome to attend. However, children under the age of 8 may NOT pilot their own craft (kayak or canoe). This article from REI can help you plan for the paddle event.

    Q. Do I need to register my boat?

    Q. What should I bring?

    • If it is cold and rainy, NO COTTON.
    • If an article of clothing says it is fleece (like a sweatshirt) make sure the fleece is polyester.
    • You are required to bring and wear a PFD if you are providing your own boat.
    • Please wear appropriate closed-toe shoes, as we will be getting in and our of our boats on several occasions and the landscape may be muddy/rocky.
    • Athletic-type/quick-drying apparel is recommended, and consider bringing a backpack or hydration pack, and snacks.
